I too experienced Operation Cast Lead as a critical turning point. I had had my doubts and concerns before then but that offensive (and truly 'offensive' does not even begin to describe it) was a final wake up call. I am someone who chose Judaism as the spiritual path I wanted to commit to precisely because of its commitment to the kind of values you highlight - justice, mercy, tikkun olam. Universal humanistic values not tribalism and a blind fixation on a strip of land. The sanctification of time and action not real estate. I agree that the issue of Israel and Palestine is the single most important issue facing Jews currently. To take up the covenant and then look the other way on Israel and Palestine or spend my time justifying Israel's actions would be a total betrayal of all that I believe in, all that is good about Judaism. It may not be a very popular position among my fellow Jews but there is simply no choice - it is impossible to live with the complete lack of congruence being a Jewish Zionist requires.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
